When Porsche Norway approaches us and asks if we can create an animated livery for a Porsche Taycan, you can’t say no. Like much of what we do, this is also a new challenge for us. It requires research and an open approach – and it’s incredibly exciting!

In connection with Porsche’s 75th anniversary, they wanted something new and unique for two events in the fall; the Porsche Festival at Rudskogen with 10,000 visitors and at the Oslo Business Forum. They want a Porsche Taycan in the middle, projecting onto the entire car and a curved screen in the background. One variant with impressive sound, and one without. – How do we solve this?

Yes, good question. There are many things that need to be clarified:
What kind of equipment do we need? How will it be experienced by the viewer? How many projectors should we use? What possibilities and limitations are there in the format? These are just some of the many questions we need to find answers to. Therefore, there must be some work done in advance in phase 1 of the project together with partners and clients.

Constraints are one thing; the creative content is the next step. What story are we going to convey and what should the experience be like? Porsche has extensive profile material and films that we have used as a starting point. We have cut and adapted Porsche’s brand film for the large surface area of 11×1.5 meters. With this as the guiding thread, we have created graphics and animations that support and enhance what is happening on the screen.

The technical aspects

Technically, we’ve mapped a 3D model of the car onto a 2-dimensional surface, animated it, and then applied it back onto the car like wallpaper. So we’ve rendered re-projected segments from each projector position into three films that play synchronously, blending the surfaces together into one encompassing image across the entire car. It involves some mathematics and a lot of meticulous technical tweaking, but the result is an experience centered around a Porsche Taycan with technology that is “invisible.”

Thank you for good cooperation and a well-executed project and production. Porsche Norway and Adrian Enok Friis, Modus Design, Kompanjongene, Scenekonsult.
