Devi8

Devi8 Research Project will develop a set of innovative methods and tools for virtual production set and scene optimization. The set of tools are jointly called Devi8 Tool Suite, and will help redefine the work process, simplify tasks, enable faster set turnaround and reduce the need of costly reshoots. LedHub, Atea Fredrikstad partner together with Netron and IFE in Devi8 Research Project.

On this website, you will find informal, regular updates about the project. If you have any questions about Devi8 or Virtual Production in general, please feel free to contact the project owner, Simen Matri Apenes, at +47 92617781 or via email at simen@netron.no.

  • The last two weeks have flown by! Several meetings with IFE have been conducted. It is demanding to get everything in place both practically and strategically in connection with the revision of the project to be submitted to the Research Council. Now agreements, revised budgets, and progress are starting to fall into place. Special thanks to Karianne Hauge Bjugan

  • Point clouds to understand the state of virtual film production scene? With this "short" headline, we conclude week 10. Morten and Tom-Robert at IFE have worked on concrete suggestions for carrying out the first test for scanning objects on a hypothetical film set. The test forms the basis for detecting changes and displacements on a

  • Technical Choices, Part 1 Technical possibilities, limitations, and costs have been key focuses this week. Atea Fredrikstad, Led Hub and Netron met in person to examine alternatives sourced by Atea from various manufacturers. The task was/is to plan a test environment in an LED volume. Insights from all three partners are highly relevant in the discussion. The technical alternatives

  • Digital becomes physical and practical The most important task of the week has been to concretize and plan the work ahead. Morten (IFE) and Simen (Netron) met for a full-day working session where we discussed innovations, issues, opportunities, challenges, and limitations surrounding the research. We started by segmenting physical objects on a scene. We prepared practical tests

  • Meeting from the home office this week. Morten is raising the flag to celebrate a family birthday. At the moment, a significant portion of our time is dedicated to concretizing the research into practical tasks and preparing the project's practical aspects such as contracts and double-checking progress. This week, Torgeir and Simen also met with DevinSense and

  • Market potential Having an early indication of market value is crucial; it helps us tailor innovations towards what the market actually needs. As we tackle the challenges in the research project, we focus on solutions that address commercial challenges, are scalable, and have market potential. Identifying this early in the project gives us a better chance to build something that

  • Virtual Production in a Cultural Hall? This week, we conducted a site visit to set up a test rig in Fredrikstad. Blå Grotte Cultural Hall is intriguing for examining the combination of film production alongside other types of cultural productions. Efficient resetting of scene setups is a common theme in the innovations we are researching. Continuously scanning objects (props

  • A week filled with a vast amount of newfound knowledge about Virtual Production. On Saturday, January 20th, LedHub organized an incredibly useful seminar at the test LED volume in Drammen. The event covered a wide range and addressed practical and technical opportunities and challenges of the production technique. 90 participants gained experiences from content producers,

  • The first meeting with the Research Council was conducted this week. Morten (IFE), Malin, Simen (Netron) attended in person at Bergur and Michael and Guri participated via video. This was a practical review of details in the contract with the Research Council. At LedHub in Drammen this week, there have been several industry activities and R&D

  • The project has just started, and things are already happening at a rapid pace. Led Hub is in the process of setting up a test LED volume in Drammen and will host a series of events, training, and tests throughout January. Setting up such a rig is complex with many elements that need

  • We're underway! This week, there have been several conversations between Atea and Netron where execution, the importance of the project, and not least practical discussions around a test volume have been some of the topics. LedHub and Netron are now creating a joint specification of needs which Atea is exploring with its partners.   Pictures from the
